시는 지난 2년 동안 ‘수원 경제자유구역’ 조성을 위한 계획을 수립했고, 지난 1월 경기도 공모에 제안서를 제출했다.

심사위원단은 응모 지자체를 대상으로 2월 발표 평가, 3월 현장평가를 진행했고, 경기경제자유구역 추가 지정을 위한 개발계획 변경(안) 수립 연구용역 대상지로 수원시·파주시·의정부시 등 3개 시를 선정했다. 수원시는 산업기반, 정주 여건, 교통인프라 등 모든 부분에서 고루 좋은 평가를 받았다.

앞서 시는 ‘반도체·바이오 등 첨단산업 연구개발(R&D)의 핵심 거점 조성’을 경제자유구역 목표로 제시했다. 수원 R&D사이언스파크와 탑동 이노베이션 밸리를 중심으로 100만 평 규모(3.3㎢)의 ‘수원 경제자유구역’을 조성한 후, 2단계로 200만 평(6.6㎢) 규모로 확장한다는 구상도 포함했다.
