이천시가 28일 경기형과학고 유치를 성공적으로 마쳤다고 밝혔다.

이천시의 과학고 유치 추진은 지난해 8월 이천시의회와 이천교육지원청과 협약을 체결하면서 본격적으로 시작됐다. 이후 정책토론회와 결의대회를 개최하며 이천시민들은 자발적인 릴레이 응원을 통해 과학고에 대한 강한 열망을 보여줬다.

앞서 시는 지난해 11월 공모 신청서를 제출한 후 1단계 예비 지정에 이어 올해 1월 2단계 특목고 지정·운영 심의위원회 심의를 통과했다. 그리고 2월 교육부 동의를 받아, 이후 경기도교육청의 지정 고시를 끝으로 이천과학고(가칭)의 유치가 확정됐다.

이로써 그동안 교육 소외 지역이었던 경기 동부권은 권역 최초의 특목고인 이천과학고 유치로 교육 불균형이 해소될 것으로 기대된다.

이천과학고의 설립 부지는 증일동 일대의 자연녹지지역으로 33,138㎡ 규모에 달한다. 이는 전국 과학고 평균 부지면적보다 넓은 규모이며 자연환경이 뛰어나고 주변에 유해시설이 없어 쾌적하고 안전한 학습환경을 제공한다. 또한 인근에는 중리택지지구와 이천역이 있어 학생들과 교직원들의 생활 편의성을 높여줄 것으로 기대된다.
