[브레이크뉴스경기남부=평택 이현준기자] 평택시가 고덕국제학교 유치를 위해 해외 4개 학교와 본격적인 협상에 들어갔다고 25일 밝혔다.

국제학교 유치를 위해 시는 지난해 5월 예비협상대상자를 공개 모집했으며, 지난해 12월까지 총 17개 외국학교법인으로부터 국제학교 설립‧운영계획서를 제출받은 바 있다.

이에 평택시는 지난 1월 교육‧재무‧법률‧행정 분야 외부전문가들로 구성된 선정위원회를 통해 미국‧영국 4개 학교를 우선협상그룹으로 선정했다. 이들 4개 학교는 세계적으로 인정받는 커리큘럼과 교육 성과를 갖춘 우수한 교육기관으로 평가받고 있다.

최종 학교 선정을 위해 시는 우선협상그룹에 포함된 4개 학교와 ‘동시 협상’을 추진한다는 방침이다. 실제 지난주에는 본교의 이사장 및 총교장 등이 포함된 1개 학교 협상단이 평택시를 방문해 국제학교 설립 여건 등을 파악하고, 유치조건 등에 대해 협상을 펼쳤다.

시는 3월 중으로 다른 학교 협상단과도 직접 만나 협상을 추진할 계획이다.

평택시 관계자는 “우리나라는 아시아의 다른 나라들과 달리 해외 외국학교법인이 직접 분교를 설립해야 하는 현행 법률로 국제학교 유치가 어렵다”면서도 “평택시는 본교와 함께 국제학교 설립 추진단을 구성하고, 행정‧재정적 지원을 다해 국제학교를 유치할 것”이라고 밝혔다.

정장선 시장은 “4개 학교와의 동시 협상 과정에서 평택이 지닌 장점을 적극적으로 설명해 국제학교가 성공적으로 개교할 수 있도록 모든 노력을 다하겠다”고 전했다.
