[Break News Southern Gyeonggi = Suwon Reporter Gwi-seon Lee] Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education (Superintendent Tae-hee Lim) is speeding up support for selection of pilot area contest projects by discovering a customized model for educational development special zones that fit the characteristics of eight cities and counties and forming a promotion team.

The Special Educational Development Zone is a policy of local governments, offices of education, universities, companies, public institutions, etc. working together to foster local educational innovation and local talent. It seeks to provide a variety of education within public education by linking infants to elementary, middle, high schools, and universities.

On the afternoon of the 9th, Superintendent Lim Tae-hee visited Sangsu Elementary School in Yangju City, which overcame the crisis of school closure by operating a curriculum that took advantage of local characteristics, and listened to the opinions of the educational community on the direction of local educational development.

Attendees included Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Lee Joo-ho, Yangju Mayor Kang Soo-hyun, Dongducheon-Yangju Office of Education officials, faculty, staff, students, and parents.

Superintendent Lim said, “Change in a school is a process led by faculty and staff and created through cooperation between students, parents, and the community. Sangsu Elementary School is the best example of a small school and a place where there is a lot to see and learn from those around us.”

She continued, “We have maintained and developed the good projects started by the previous principal, and the current principal has further developed them into a ‘good school that is a gift to the children to the school and the school to the children.’”

She said Superintendent Lim said, “It is difficult to increase the number of students these days, but I will learn well the story of Sangsu Elementary School, which is able to increase the number of students because of school education.”

She said Superintendent Lim “must have felt happy and rewarded seeing the teachers and staff working together and seeing the children change and the school change,” and that she “cannot be defeated by the power of autonomy in the educational community.”

Lastly, she said, “Public education can also be changed like this. Let’s work together to say that public education has changed and private education is no longer needed.”

Meanwhile, special educational development zones are designated as areas with population decline in the metropolitan area or border areas, including 8 cities and counties: Gimpo-si, Goyang-si, Dongducheon-si, Yangju-si, Paju-si, Pocheon-si, Yeoncheon-gun, and Gapyeong-gun. The Provincial Office of Education plans to actively support eight cities and counties by sharing progress status and providing consulting through the promotion team.
