[Break News Gyeonggi South = Gwangmyeong Reporter Gwi-seon Lee] With the results of the feasibility study on the relocation of the Guro vehicle depot imminent, the joint countermeasures committee against the relocation of the Guro vehicle depot to Gwangmyeong (chaired by Lee Seung-ho, Kim Po-jung, and Lee Seung-bong, hereinafter referred to as the 'joint countermeasures committee') is in Guro Citizens’ one-person protests against the relocation of the vehicle base to Gwangmyeong are taking place simultaneously.

Through a press release on the 15th, the Joint Countermeasures Committee announced that Gwangmyeong Mayor Park Seung-won held an emergency one-person demonstration in front of the Ministry of Strategy and Finance on March 2, and that Gwangmyeong citizens and civic groups are actively conducting one-person demonstrations.

The joint countermeasures committee is composed of 8 organizations such as Gwangmyeong Citizens, Gwangmyeong Gyeongsilyeon, Gwangmyeong YWCA, and Gwangmyeong YMCA, and the Gwangmyeong Civic Group Council, and since 2019, it has continued to inform citizens about the problems of the Guro vehicle base relocation project. After participating in a one-person protest against the relocation of the Guro vehicle depot at the National Assembly on March 7th, until March 14th, simultaneous protests were held in front of the main gates of the National Assembly, Yongsan Presidential Office, Guro-gu Office, Ministry of Strategy and Finance, and Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

Park Cheol-hee, executive chairman of the Joint Countermeasures Committee, said, “There are still too many citizens in Gwangmyeong who do not know properly about the relocation of the vehicle depot. If it is relocated, Gwangmyeong City will be remembered by descendants as the worst failure that not only suffers permanent damage but also gives up the opportunity to become a representative city in the metropolitan area.”

Heo Jeong-ho, chairman of the Gwangmyeong Civic Group Council Steering Committee (Secretary General of the Gwangmyeong Police Federation), criticized, saying, “The problem of relocating the Guro vehicle depot is to pass a heavy burden on the citizens of Gwangmyeong and future generations who will live in Gwangmyeong in the future in order to solve the complaints of the residents of Guro-gu, Seoul.”

Gwangmyeong citizens are in a position that they cannot understand why Gwangmyeong City has to take on the noise and pollution problems of the Guro vehicle depot. Who would be convinced if the government promoted this project without sufficient compensation for Gwangmyeong City, using only theoretical economic feasibility as an excuse in a situation where permanent damage to Gwangmyeong City was obvious?

In addition, the opinion of the majority of citizens is that it is difficult to believe that it is possible for the government to enforce a project that the local government opposes in the era of local autonomy.

Environmental change in Gwangmyeong City is also one of the reasons why Gwangmyeong citizens oppose it. This is because Gwangmyeong City, where various development plans are scheduled, such as the 3rd Gwangmyeong Siheung New Town, Gwangmyeong Siheung Techno Valley, and Haan District 2, is being reborn as the central city of the southwestern part of the metropolitan area, completely different from Gwangmyeong City in 2005 when this project was first planned.

Meanwhile, the Gwangmyeong Civic Group Council held a press conference against the relocation of the Guro vehicle depot on World Water Day (March 22). We plan to actively inform citizens that the right to health of citizens is being threatened due to dust.
