[Break News Gyeonggi Nambu = Reporter Kim Jong-un, Yongin] Yongin City urged people to be careful not to contract tick-borne diseases as outdoor activities increase from June to September.
Severe febrile thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS), tsutsugamushi, Lyme disease, and tick-borne encephalitis are typical tick-borne diseases caused by tick bites. It starts in spring every year and occurs most often from June to September when outdoor activities increase.
In the early stages of SFTS, gastrointestinal symptoms such as fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain of unknown cause appear. If the decrease in platelets and white blood cells is severe, the bleeding does not stop and it can lead to death due to the failure of kidney function and multiple organ function, so you should be very careful.
Tsutsugamushi symptoms appear after an incubation period of 10 to 12 days after being bitten by a tick. It is characterized by fever, sweating, headache, conjunctival hyperemia, and ulcers accompanied by scabs at the site where the tick larvae attach to the skin and suck blood.
Lyme disease is caused by tick bites, and after 3 to 23 days, fever, headache, and fatigue appear along with migratory erythema (a skin symptom with red edges and a soft appearance) on the skin. In patients with delayed diagnosis or immunocompromised, complications may occur, so early treatment is of utmost importance.
After an incubation period of about 8 days, tick-borne encephalitis develops central nervous system symptoms such as fever, headache or sensory disturbance, and paralysis. Although no cases have been reported in Korea yet, as outbreaks are occurring in China, Japan, Russia, Germany, and Switzerland, you should prepare for tick bites when traveling to these areas.
In order to prevent tick-borne diseases, it is recommended to minimize skin exposure during agricultural work and outdoor activities such as in the mountains or fields, and to spray a tick repellent on the exposed skin. After outdoor activities, be sure to wash your clothes, check for any bites, and shower.
Above all, if you are bitten by a tick, do not pop or remove the tick by hand, but immediately visit a nearby hospital to remove it and receive treatment.
A city official said, “When doing agricultural work or outdoor activities, you should be careful to protect yourself from ticks by wearing long sleeves, long pants, and boots.
